ACANTHUS FRIEZE

The design is based on an antique original. The frieze comprises a repeated Acanthus leaf motif surmounted by a simple cornice. The flanking blocks are supported with classical columns and decorated with stylised flowerhead paterae. Shot decoration runs along the edge of the mirror and the outer edge of the frame.
The design is very adaptable and looks good either wider or taller.

This example has a painted finish (rather than the usual leaf gilt) which is then overcast with a gentle toning which catches in the hollows of the design and gives a soft effect to the gilt.
